3 Reasons Why Your New Home Needs New Gutters Now

Have you recently purchased a new home? Do the gutters on your new home leave much to be desired? If you're like many people, your first instinct may be to simply get rid of the hassle by removing the gutters completely. But taking this route can have many unintended consequences that you may not have known about or considered before. If you're a first-time homeowner, it's important that you educate yourself on as many aspects of your new home as possible. Some things that you should know about gutters include the following.

1. Avoid basement damage: Having gutters that have been properly installed by one of your local guttering services can be an essential part of keeping your basement undamaged by flooding. Without gutters, even a relatively small rainstorm can dump hundreds or even thousands of gallons of water almost directly onto your foundation.

When you have a basement, this excess of water can then build up enough pressure to force its way through tiny cracks in your basement walls and floor, resulting in flooding. When you have gutters installed, the water is directed away from your foundation to a safe location.

2. Prevent pests: Gutters that become clogged with leaves and other debris can be prime nesting spots for rats, mice, and various insects. From this roof location, it's then a relatively short trip to nesting inside of your home itself. If you don't want to have to clean out your gutters on a regular basis, look for one of the local guttering services that have clog-free gutters available.

In some instances, you may be able to install a special top onto your current gutters, preventing leaves and other debris from entering. In some cases, you may have to install completely new gutters in order to be able to have a hassle-free system.

3. Avoid roof leaks: Properly installed and maintained gutters don't just keep your basement safe, they also help keep your roof safe as well. In many instances, having gutters that are badly clogged and poorly maintained can be worse than not having any gutters at all. When it rains, the gutters will quickly fill up with water and start to spill over.

While they may spill over the edge and directly to the ground, this may not be all that happens. The water can also back up onto your roof, under your shingles. This can then result in dry rot and other issues that then lead to serious leaks. If necessary, have one of your local guttering services repair or replace damaged sections of your gutters as soon as possible in order to help prevent this from happening.
